Focusing on Kitchen Table Issues

The kitchen table is often the cornerstone of the home — where families come together to reflect on their days at school or work, do their homework, share a joke, and break bread. It is also where far too many spend long hours stressing late into the night over household bills. Across our region, families are working harder and harder just to make ends meet as the prices of everyday goods continue to go up while large corporations report record-breaking profits. There’s something wrong with this picture.

  • While Washington politicians point fingers, Michigan families are struggling with the rising, unpredictable cost of prescriptions, groceries, housing, childcare, and other items. The ripple effects are felt across our communities as families have less purchasing power, and many small businesses are already treading water due to the pandemic and global supply chain issues. Emily will fight to stop oil companies from price gouging us at the pump, to bring down drug costs and cap the price of insulin for everyone, and to crack down on corporate investors who buy up our housing stock and drive up the cost of housing. As our voice in Congress, Emily will work to boost wages, expand paid leave, safeguard retirement security, hold greedy corporations accountable, repair and strengthen supply chains, and lower costs to help local families get ahead.

  • When Emily’s father was diagnosed with fast-moving lung cancer, her family’s world was turned upside down. He lost his battle just a few short months later, leaving her mom to pick up the pieces and figure out how to make ends meet for their family. It doesn’t have to be this way. Everyone should have access to quality, affordable healthcare, and yet, too many are forced to choose between a visit to the doctor and paying this month’s mortgage. Parents should not go broke paying for their child’s insulin, or have to ration doses just to afford them. Travel to care providers can be long, costly, and burdensome as health facilities close their doors. Stigmas surrounding mental health and substance abuse and those who seek services for such issues persist. That’s why Emily will prioritize expanding physical and mental health coverage for every Michigander, reining in the skyrocketing cost of lifesaving prescriptions, and protecting pre-existing condition protections as our next member of Congress. When we improve health access and outcomes, our communities and families will be that much stronger.

  • As a proud graduate of public schools, Emily knows the important role schools play as hubs in our communities and believes that all students deserve the opportunity to pursue and achieve their limitless potential. She is committed to ensuring that Michigan students, parents, and educators have the resources they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond — from pre-K to higher education to older adults. That’s why she opposes vouchers that undermine public education and take tax dollars away from our local public schools. In Congress, Emily will prioritize solutions to modernize and lift up our schools, ensure kids receive quality early childhood and K-12 education regardless of their zip code, ease the cost burden of higher education, and expand hands-on apprenticeship and workforce development programs, so that all workers can receive best-in-class training and can get good jobs.
