“when I see a problem, I roll up my sleeves to fix it. That’s what moms do.”

On November 30, 2021, Emily Busch’s teenage son ran for his life from a school shooter. Emily’s son, Andrew, was in music class at Oxford High School that day when a 15-year-old with a gun opened fire on his classmates in the hallway, killing four and wounding seven. Andrew's teacher, a hero, hid students in an empty room before rushing them out a back door to safety.

Galvanized to protect other communities from similar trauma, Emily knew she had to take action. She started attending Board of Education meetings and organizing discussions with parents, teachers, and neighbors in the weeks and months following the shooting. Emily contacted elected leaders and testified before the Michigan legislature, pleading for action while sharing her family’s experience and firsthand observations of the physical and psychological impacts of the tragedy. Alongside other parents, teachers, students, families, and survivors, Emily successfully advocated for historic common-sense gun safety legislation at the state level following the Oxford shooting.

Emily first learned the importance of community and helping others from her mom, a nurse, and dad, a manufacturing representative, while growing up in a tight-knit, middle-class Midwestern family. The proud product of public schools, Emily worked hard in and out of the classroom, balancing her studies and interest in performing arts with an after-school job as a cashier at Ace Hardware. She went on to earn her B.A. in Biology from Indiana University and Masters from Michigan State University.

Emily chose to move to Oakland County two decades ago because it was the place she wanted to raise her family – a place with friendly neighbors, good schools, and safe neighborhoods. She and her husband, a retired firefighter and Marine, enjoy camping, fishing, and visiting national parks in their free time.

Now, Emily is running for Congress in Michigan’s 10th District to keep our kids safe, protect our rights, and lower costs for Michigan families. While John James and his extremist allies in Washington offer nothing but ‘thoughts and prayers,’ Emily brings a fresh perspective and drive to deliver real results. Having spent nearly 30 years in the business sector honing her problem-solving skills, and Bachelors and Masters degrees in the sciences, Emily is a critical thinker committed to finding comprehensive solutions to so many issues impacting our nation’s youth — most importantly the United States’ gun violence epidemic. Emily is ready to work with anyone, regardless of party, to tackle our most urgent challenges.
